K. Verlag is a publishing atelier advancing new forms of the “book-as-exhibition.” Since starting the press in 2011, our editorial-curatorial work produces unique geographical and physical encounters in the context of art, science, design, and politics. Previous projects by K. have engaged themes of naturecultures, post/colonialism and ethnography, geopolitics, contemporary history and environmental violence, as well as visual culture, literature, and feminism. Historical archives, including libraries and museums, are assayed via intersectional approaches and hybrid methodologies to explore important issues of our times.
The Berlin-based publishing atelier collaborates internationally with artists and institutions, developing singular volumes, whose materiality and architecture are never exhausted for the purpose of (exhibition) documentation alone. Through its practice, K. pushes the boundaries of the traditional ex-hibition catalog—our publications instead open independent and/or adjacent aesthetic and discursive spaces. Engaged in an intense dialogue with image and text, design and intellect, authors and editors, designers and printers, K. Verlag has been exploring ever different variations of a medium that is far from dead.
To date, K. has published more than 20 publications, including Dora García’s On Reconciliation / Über Versöhnung, which was named one of the 25 Most Beautiful Books by the German Stiftung Buchkunst, as well as The Work of Wind: Land (co-published with The Blackwood Gallery), which won the 2019 Book Design award of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries in Canada. In 2020, K. will launch a new series—Processing Process—as our first, the intercalations: paginated exhibition series, co-published with the Haus der Kulturen der Welt as part of Das Anthropozän-Projekt, comes to a close with the release of its final two volumes.
In May 2020, K. Verlag was named a recipient of the prestigious Deutscher Verlagspreis (German Publishing Prize), which is awarded annually to honor outstanding independent publishers by the Federal Ministry of Culture.
K. Verlag was initially co-founded in 2011 by Anna-Sophie Springer and Charles Stankievech. Since 2015, Anna-Sophie has been the sole operator, director, and manager of K. Verlag from her studio in Berlin-Lichtenberg.
